Medicaid in Tennessee: Not expanded
Tennessee has not expanded Medicaid under the ACA. Tennessee's Medicaid program, TennCare, was previously one of the most expansive in the country but was scaled back in 2005. The current coverage gap affects roughly 200,000 Tennesseans.
Benefits in Tennessee
Tennessee's TennCare program was once among the most ambitious Medicaid programs in the country, but enrollment was cut by about one-third in 2005 after cost overruns. Adults without children remain ineligible regardless of income. The state administers SNAP and TANF (called Families First) through county DHS offices. Tennessee also has Project HOPE — a pilot program providing limited health coverage to some low-income adults — but it is far smaller than full expansion.
