Tips for gathering documents
- • Request records from previous employers, doctors, and schools in writing — allow 1-2 weeks for responses.
- • Make copies of everything you submit — agencies can lose paperwork.
- • If a document is unavailable, ask the agency about acceptable alternatives (affidavits, sworn statements, or collateral contacts).
- • File the application first, then provide documents — missing a document is better than missing an application deadline.
- • Social Security cards are free to replace — visit ssa.gov or your local SSA office.
