How SNAP benefits are calculated

1

Start with gross monthly income

SNAP counts all household income: wages, self-employment, unemployment, Social Security, child support, and other sources. A household's gross income must be at or below 130% FPL to qualify (unless the household includes an elderly or disabled member, who face a net income test only).

2

Subtract the earned income deduction

20% of any earned income (wages, salaries, self-employment) is deducted. This deduction recognizes that working households have employment-related expenses and incentivizes work.

3

Subtract the standard deduction

Every household receives a standard deduction regardless of actual expenses: $198/month for households of 1-3 people, $208 for 4 people, $244 for 5, and $279 for 6+ in 2024.

4

Apply the shelter deduction

Housing costs (rent/mortgage + utilities) that exceed 50% of your income after the above deductions can be deducted — capped at $672/month for most households. Elderly/disabled households have no cap. High rent significantly increases this deduction and your benefit.

5

Calculate the benefit

Your monthly benefit = Maximum allotment for your household size − 30% of your net income. The 30% figure reflects the expectation that households contribute 30% of their net income toward food.
