Summer Food Service Program
Free meals for children during the summer when school is out.
About This Program
The Summer Food Service Program fills the nutrition gap that opens each summer when school meal programs close. From mid-June through August, approved sites — public schools, parks, recreation centers, libraries, churches, and community organizations — serve free breakfasts and lunches to any child 18 or under, with no income test and no application required. Children simply show up during meal service hours. The program is particularly important for low-income children who rely on school meals as a significant portion of their daily nutrition. Studies consistently show that food insecurity increases for low-income children over summer months compared to the school year, and that Summer Food Service sites mitigate this effect in areas where they operate. Coverage is uneven — rural areas and smaller communities often have fewer sites than urban areas, and some eligible children live too far from a site to access meals regularly. Some states and localities supplement the federal program with additional meal sites or transportation assistance. To find summer meal sites in your area, text "FOOD" or "COMIDA" to 914-342-7744, or use the USDA's Summer Meals Site Finder at summerfood.fns.usda.gov. Site hours and dates vary; call ahead or check online listings before visiting.
