Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Additional grant aid for undergraduates with exceptional financial need.

About This Program

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) provides additional grant money to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need — on top of the Pell Grant. Unlike the Pell Grant, which is a direct federal entitlement, FSEOG is administered by individual schools from a limited allocation. This means FSEOG availability and award amounts vary by institution, and students at some schools may not receive FSEOG even if they qualify. FSEOG priority goes to Pell Grant recipients with the lowest Student Aid Index (SAI) scores — in other words, students with the greatest financial need who are already receiving the maximum Pell Grant award. Schools are required to use at least 25% of their FSEOG allocation for students with exceptional need before awarding to others. Award amounts range from $100 to $4,000 per academic year, though most awards fall in the $300-$1,000 range. The award is based on the student's financial need and the school's available FSEOG funds, which is why applying early matters — many schools exhaust their FSEOG allocation before the end of their aid application cycle. Like the Pell Grant, FSEOG does not need to be repaid and can be used for any educational expense. The FAFSA is required to receive FSEOG, and there is no separate application — FSEOG eligibility is determined automatically when schools review FAFSA information.
