Head Start / Early Head Start

Free early childhood education and family support for low-income children.

About This Program

Head Start is a federal program that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and family support services to children from birth to age 5 in low-income families. For children ages 3-5, Head Start offers structured preschool programs that build school readiness through early literacy, numeracy, social-emotional skills, and physical development. Early Head Start serves pregnant women and children from birth through age 3 with similar comprehensive services. The scope of Head Start goes well beyond a preschool classroom. Programs provide health screenings, dental screenings, nutrition services, mental health services, and connections to community resources. Family advocates work with parents to set and pursue goals — whether that means getting a GED, finding employment, or stabilizing housing. The program takes a "two-generation" approach: helping children develop while also supporting parents. Head Start programs are operated by local grantees — nonprofit organizations, schools, and community agencies — and quality varies significantly by grantee. Some programs have long waitlists; applying early is important. Priority is given to families at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, but up to 10% of enrollment slots can be filled by children from families above the poverty line. There is no federal application portal for Head Start.
