Meals on Wheels (NSIP)

Home-delivered and congregate meals for seniors 60+.

About This Program

Meals on Wheels programs — funded through the USDA Nutrition Services Incentive Program and the Older Americans Act — deliver nutritious meals to seniors 60 and older who have difficulty shopping or preparing food. Home-delivered meals come to recipients wherever they live, typically once daily. Congregate meals are served at community centers, senior centers, and similar locations where seniors can eat together. Beyond food, Meals on Wheels programs serve an important safety and social function. Volunteers and staff who deliver meals often serve as the only regular contact for isolated seniors. Many programs do welfare checks as part of each delivery — noting whether the recipient seems well, answering questions about local services, and flagging concerns to supervisors. For elderly adults living alone, this human contact can be life-saving. The program operates on a suggested donation basis — seniors are asked to contribute what they can, but no one is turned away for inability to pay. Funding comes from the Older Americans Act, USDA commodity support, and local fundraising. Many local programs have waitlists during periods of high demand. To enroll, contact your local Area Agency on Aging (use the eldercare locator at eldercare.acl.gov or call 1-800-677-1116) or your local Meals on Wheels provider directly. Meals on Wheels America's locator at mealsonwheelsamerica.org can help you find your nearest program.
