Legal Aid Services

Free civil legal help for low-income individuals.

About This Program

Legal aid organizations provide free civil legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney. Civil legal issues — eviction defense, foreclosure prevention, domestic violence protective orders, benefits denials, debt collection, immigration matters, family law — can have life-altering consequences, but most low-income people face them without representation. Legal aid organizations help bridge that gap. Services vary by organization and location. Some legal aid offices provide full representation — an attorney appears in court with you. Others provide advice and counsel, help you understand your options, and prepare documents without appearing on your behalf. Brief advice services are common for people who need to understand their rights before a hearing or deadline but cannot access an attorney in time. Income eligibility is generally at or below 125% of the federal poverty level, though some programs extend to 200% for specific issue areas. Not all legal aid organizations handle all types of cases — some specialize in housing, others in immigration, others in benefits. When you call, explain your situation clearly and ask what services are available for your issue. To find legal aid in your area, visit lawhelp.org and select your state, or call your state bar association's lawyer referral service. Many courthouses also have legal aid offices or self-help centers that can provide guidance for unrepresented litigants. Emergency legal services for imminent evictions, protective orders, and deportation proceedings are often available with shorter waiting times than routine civil matters.
