Medicaid in North Carolina: Expanded
North Carolina became the last state in the Southeast to expand Medicaid, doing so in December 2023. The expansion added an estimated 600,000 adults earning up to 138% FPL.
Benefits in North Carolina
North Carolina's late expansion in December 2023 was the result of years of legislative debate and a compromise tied to a state budget. North Carolina administers SNAP, TANF (called Work First Family Assistance), and NC Medicaid through county DSS offices. The state uses a combined enrollment portal called ePASS. With expansion now in place, the coverage gap that had affected roughly 600,000 North Carolinians for nearly a decade is largely closed.
